117 ~ Disability tool aids – Part 1 ~

This is a post of some random items listed, that can be of assistance to people with disabilities. Be it visible or invisible.

Categorized as part 1, so if need be to list more in the future, i can add it on as a second part for easier referance or search.

1) Hair wash tray

I can no longer wash hair myself due to the strained pressure it creates upon my heart & lungs when rubbing vigorously.. Which results in unfavorable consequences such as fainting etc.

So someone does it for me in the bathroom basin whilst sitting on a chair..

The hair wash tray is ideal because there are various types to use in a bathroom or while laying in a bed. The water falls off without dripping down your clothing.

An added bonus is, you can let someone wash your hair without having to rinse your body immediately thereafter, because there’s no wetness.

Here are 2 web links to purchase it in SA, one is

Home

And the other is

If readers recall, I ordered a mask from them in June 2018 & it was promptly delivered a few weeks later, not the same pattern I liked & actually ordered.. But at least it came considering the bad reviews regarding their service.

2) Wheelchair cup holders

For those of us who need to carry along our bottles of rehydration everywhere.. No worries of having to hold it for long periods or the bottle dropping or getting lost

The 2 images below are from takealot.com

Wantitall & disabilityinfosa also have similar

3) Bottles / flasks

I had an intention to buy the quench flasks since it’s guaranteed 18 hours hot & 24 hours cold, but before I could, a dear student beat me ๐ŸŽ

No hassle of having to keep water bottles shaded or in a cooler bag..

A blessing during all seasons.

In the summer days we’ve had now.. You’d never think the bottle layed in the sun because the water remains cool / chilled.

This is my name engraved on in Arabic ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜

4) Stainless steel straws

Have you joined the #pppstrawcampaign to save our planet by ditching plastic usage to save the life of our oceans?

Whilst it is a strongly advocated movement, keep in mind, it is not applicable to everyone in the disabled community who are living with neurological & other conditions

Some experience metal allergy / stacity & paper straws are also not durable for hot drinks etc. And the fact is; we need to use straws often.

Anways, in an effort to play a part I tried my luck by purchasing online from @faithfultonature on #blessedfridayspecials ๐Ÿ˜‚ & my body seems to be tolerating it thus far ๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ˜๐Ÿ‘
I give it a โญโญโญโญโญ rating for the 2 months of usage.

They also have straight straws but those were out of stock.

It doesn’t feel odd in any way & I’m quite comfortable sipping through.

5) Emergency alert button

For elderly people prone to slips & falls, or young people like me who faint / fall unconscious without being able to call / scream for help in time..

Often it happened that I did not have my phone on hand to quickly inform someone I’m feeling dizzy, have difficulty breathing or about to collapse…

From a first hand experience of searching between other companies.. With surety I say that My Lifeline is the best emergency alert services provided in SA. Helpful people with speedy & pleasant work.

The watch also comes with a magnetic touch to charge which makes it easier for the elderly.

Immediate attention at the press of a button on your wrist.

All the information is attached below in image format or you can tap the link

6) Baby video monitor

Purchased from takealot.com

This is for the nights I am more unstable than others.. A family members keeps the monitor in his / her room & the camera (with voice option) stays on my pedestal positioned towards the posture I sleep.

If need be, I can indicate; something is wrong or call through for help if able to talk.

“Additional night surveillance” ๐Ÿ˜† lol

7) Breakfast table / Or lightweight mini eating table

For times I need to eat on the bed or a couch

Also from takealot.com lol… Their namesake has a strong effect ๐Ÿ˜‚

Then I bought a fancy paper from creative talents & a few kind hearted family members offered to decorate & cover it with liquid glass for extra protection of the wood, to avoid it getting damaged with spills.

(Although I can’t drink coffee, the paper was just cute to use ๐Ÿ˜‚)

Its been serving the purpose well.. Only the legs give in if it gets knocked hard, so we’ve asked a carpenter to insert 2 clips to make it sturdier.

Then I also have a lightweight mini, foldable carry table that is very useful.

Purchased from Macro.

** These are the tools I can think about for now.

Hope it can be of benefit to others searching for similar aids..

If there is anything else you are using that is helpful which I might be unaware of or have forgotten..

Please comment & feel free to add in your input..

Shukran / Thank you!!

I’ve seen that you get silicon straws even…maybe if the metal ones don’t agree with anyone they could try that…
